The Simon Suspension
Chris Simon was slapped with a minimum 25 game suspension yesterday (March 10, 2007) for his two handed slash to the face of NY Rangers forward Ryan Hollweg. Simon will be forced to miss games at the beginning of the 2007/2008 season if the Islanders do not qualify for the playoffs, or play fewer than 10 playoff games. Simon will miss the remaining 15 regular season games this year. There is one catch however; even if the Islanders do play over ten playoff games, Simon will not be permitted to participate following that period of time. Colin Campbell, Director of Hockey Operations, stated "As a consequence of his actions, Mr. Simon has forfeited the privilege of playing in an NHL game again this season, regardless of how many games the Islanders ultimately play."Unfortunately for Simon, due to his 1M/Year contract, he will forfeit a minimum $80,213.90. Simon has not expressed remorse for his actions, and has not apologized to Hollweg.

The Simon Slash
Jumping right into it here...
Yesterday evening (March 8, 2007) Chris Simon (NY Islanders) viciously slashed NY Rangers' forward Ryan Hollweg in the facial/neck area. An incident rather reminiscient of Marty Mcsorly's two-handed swing to the side of the head of Donald Brashear, this was far more pronounced, and more direct to the face. Hollweg immediately dropped to the ice, but was able to get back on his feet with the assistance of the Rangers' Medical Trainer. Incidents of this nature seem to be more frequently occurring around the league; allow me to cite the example of Todd Bertuzzi's hit on Steve Moore of the Colorado Avalanche. Simon is likely to receive a suspension for the remainder of the regular season, and will not be permitted to participate should The Islanders manage to slip inside the playoff cut, as well as fined heavily. Also, expect to see a lawsuit from the Family of Ryan Hollweg. It seems that whatever efforts Gary Bettman makes to take the dirty aggression out of hockey, they are failing. What the league needs now, is to expel a player executing an act of this nature, and make an example of what is to come unless the players collectively pull together a cleaner game. Simon is indefinitely suspended at the present time.
